The Deadness Has Spread
you trip
and fall
blood rushes to the surface
what a disaster
there’s a rush to patch it up
panic ensues
clean it with a towel
but the blood still comes
cover it with a bandage
now its okay
as long as you can’t see the blood
as long as you can’t see whats underneath
throw on an ice pack
keep it there for hours
until you’re accustomed to being numb
after experiencing throbbing pain
when you take it off
the deadness has spread
it will be a long time before you can feel anything again
someone trips you
and you tumble down
left all alone
an emotional disaster
no one rushes to patch you up
you’re full of panic
you dry your tears with a tissue
but the pain still comes
there's no such thing as a bandage for the soul
but a smile will have to do
now everyone thinks you’re okay
as long as they can’t see whats underneath
you’re frozen like an ice pack
as if someone stuck you in a freezer for hours
because you just want to be numb
after being left all alone
so when they try to dust the ice crystals off the surface
they realize the deadness has spread
and it will be a long time before you can feel anything again.
I like how the entire poem is an extended metaphor for emotional pain
ReplyDeleteI like the way that this poem connects physical pain and emotional pain through an extended metaphor.
ReplyDeleteYou were able to portray a very strong message in few words. I liked how it was all an extended metaphor and you didn't just say that a heart can hurt from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteThe message is so evident, clear, and relatable. This poem is really good you should publish it. You show a connection that is so necessary to society in a way that is so easily relatable. It's really good.
